One of the things usually associated with being a hairstylist is wearing all black. I remember being in hair school, and we would all be walking across the parking lot to Lucky’s Market looking like a pack in black. Now, luckily my boss is very kind with the dress-code in the salon, and we are allowed to have creative freedom over our outfits, and I have been known to wear the occasional pink muumuu to work. That being said, I still wear mostly black, and I find it difficult to keep my outfits feeling funky and fun at times when I am wearing the same colour in different textures.

So, what do I do when I’m starting to feel like “black is no longer the new black” after wearing it day in and day out? Throw on some jewelry.

I have been a jewelry junkie since the beginning of time. Candy necklaces were my fav growing up. I loved lip gloss and lollipop rings, and I lived for the days I could dress up with my mum’s things. It’s no surprise now, that I naturally gravitate towards jewelry whenever I feel bored of an item of clothing or the same dress I’ve worn 10 times that month (you know you do it too).

Jewelry is great because you get the chance to enhance any outfit while still adding your own personal style and quirks into the mix. I often have been asked where I shop my jewelry, and how I find it so cheap. That’s what I wanted to share with you all today, especially my fellow hairstylists or any girl bosses on a budget. Like how the heck do we accessorize our entire closet for cheap?? Well, here are some of the ways I shop savvy for some sparklies.

  • Try local boutiques!

One of my favourite places in Louisville to shop is Acorn Apparel, it’s right in
theHighlands and run by the loveliest women called Sharon!! Why I love visiting is because her store is cute, inviting and well-priced. They have a sale suitcase which has rings, necklaces, cufflinks, earrings and bracelets with slashed prices. They also sell local and handmade items, and they have a great punch card system so you can get a percentage off if you go after a certain amount of times! I always find some of my favourite pieces, especially rings, there (right on the counter) that aren’t outrageously priced like big-box retailers or overly serious boutiques.

  • Second-hand stores.
I love going to places like Goodwill and Clothes Mentor for jewelry. Some of my favourite costume accessories have been purchased for $3 or less at a Goodwill on a whim and then reused and abused many times over. In addition to it being cheap, you are always in for a surprise when you are going in because inventory is constantly changing. Many times when I am walking into a second-hand shop, I don’t go in knowing what I’m gonna choose, but I let the items choose me.

  • Online.
I know you know that there was that one time you just really wanted that one item that you could not find anywhere!!! You went to the mall, you went to Target, you went to Goodwill, but you just can’t find that pair of sunglasses you’ve been dreaming of and you don’t wanna drop $$$ on the designer brands (because, again, we’re trying to make this happen on a budget). I like to look to the online stores for my specific accessory wants to see if any online sellers have it. Many times I find myself looking on Depop for my options. I love Depop because you can type in what you’re looking for and you can find options and sellers and compare price points all on one app! It’s the perfect mix of Ebay and Etsy, where you can find trendy and lightly used items for sale, and buy it from a direct person who you are supporting. I found this new pair of mini translucent pink cat eye sunglasses for like $10 on there! Safe payment method and easy communication with the seller, like could online shopping get any better? The prices can vary on the app, but that’s also up to the sellers’ preference. There is a mix of designer brand and alternative lines on the app, so something for everyone and you are supporting a single person small business when purchasing through Depop! Some of my favourite shops on Depop are @cyberspaceshop for any funky alienesque needs & @cloudbabyconsignment who is a close friend of mine who has great style and great picks in the shop to choose from!

We must go to Acorn together soon – and thrifting! Some of my favorite pieces of clothing were purchased at Goodwill.

Ps — I want to see this pink muumuu asap
