We are all talking about self-care and trying to invest more time in ourselves, and I started to wonder what is everyone else doing for self care? Are we all doing the same thing? Or is there a significant difference between all of us? Does what we see online influence what we consider to be self care? I went ahead and asked four people to figure it out.


A web developer who just finished Code Louisville and works freelance.

Do you practice any forms of self care, and if so what is it?

A wide variety of self care keeps me sane. Surprisingly, the task of cooking a detailed meal feels like therapy/ self care to me. Cooking at home is close to the top of my list of things I MUST do often. Another form of self care I’ve started recently is setting limitations from my phone. I work all day on a computer and often switch to a laptop for projects in the evening, so adding Instagram scrolling can overload my brain quickly. Lastly, exercise keeps my mind right. Some days all I can do is stretch or walk my dog, but moving always helps clear my mind.

How did you come to find this as an active practice of self care?

My early twenties started in the hair industry. I was switching cities a lot and living very indulgently. It didn’t take too many years to feel totally lost, tired and untrue to my actual self. Eventually, I started treating my body like I cared about it and that quickly changed the food I ate. As I learned about nutrition, I realized I had to start cooking my own food and I immediately loved that process. Choices became a lot easier after learning that food, movement and clarity are the things that keep me well.

Do you find yourself influenced through the people you follow online on how you practice self care?

Yes! I feel very influenced by the people I follow online (in a positive way). You can choose what you see online and I follow so many creative, beautiful people. Everyone is trying to have a good, meaningful life and seeing how others are working towards that definitely inspires me.

Is there something you wish to add to your self care routine?

I would love to add massage, facials and regular yoga classes to my routine, but for now my budget only allows thosed things sparingly.


She is a Wardrobe Assistant at Actors Theatre. Helping actors get dressed for each production + facilitate quick changes during shows. She is also a Garden Assistant at Plant Kingdom where she takes care of plants and helps people pick out new plants for both indoor and outdoor.

Do you practice any forms of self care, and if so what is it?

Yes! My full time job can be extremely successful, with crazy hours to match. So in order to stay sane and calm at work I have to make sure my life at home is exactly that. I surround myself with things that make me happy. Plants! When they’re doing good, I’m doing good. It’s very relaxing for me to slowly walk through my apartment and look at each plant as I water + maintenance them. In the summer I open the windows and throw on some jams, and usually dance my way around the apartment. Nothing makes me happier than that!

How did you come to find this as an active practice of self care?

My mom always filled our house with plants when I was a kid. So when I got my first apartment by myself filling it with plants made me feel at home. Then I started working at a plant store and learned a lot about proper care for them and instantly fell in love with them all over again. It’s how my collection tripled in size.


Do you find yourself influenced through the people you follow online on how you practice self care?

Not really. Instagram tends to make me feel like I don’t have my life together because everyone’s life seems so perfect on there. So practicing self care usually is a way for me to appreciate my apartment, my life, and everything I’ve provided for myself so far! Without needing the approval of social media. – I did start a plantstagram, which in a way feels like I’m trying to showcase all my perfect plants to prove something, but I try ti post stories about my dead plants too. I just like connecting with other plant collectors + hoarders through that platform. .

Is there something you wish to add to your self care routine?

More plants? Hahaha. Honestly, I think I need to start adding more beauty and body care to my self care routine. I feel like I constantly give other people + things more attention than I give to my own selfie. Helping people makes me happy though, so it’s hard to see that I’m neglecting myself sometimes.


She is a hostess at a funky eatery by day and moonlights as a freelance editor and writer.

Do you practice any forms of self care, and if so what is it?

I have a generalized anxiety disorder that can prevent me from allowing myself to feel at ease. When I’m overwhelmed, I do mindless chores like washing dishes or folding laundry while listening to music or watching Netflix. Knocking things off my to do list gives me a dopamine boost that helps me better enjoy other more indulgent means of self-care, like taking a bath with lavender Epsom salts or making handwritten cards for my friends.

Atmosphere plays a big role in my self-care routine, too. I always have a candle lit in my apartment, which allows for its own kind of calm, and on warm, sunny days, I throw all the windows open and let the sunshine filter in.

How did you come to find this as an active practice of self care?

For the most part, I’ve come about my self-care routine through a process of trial and error by listening to what my mind and body are telling me they need, and responding accordingly. Otherwise, I identified the post-chore dopamine boost with the help of an old therapist after being diagnosed with attention deficit disorder a couple of years ago, and it has helped me give myself permission to rewrite bad days.


Do you find yourself influenced through the people you follow online on how you practice self care?

Social media has certainly turned me on to some of the things people do or places people go when they’re looking to show themselves extra attention, but I suppose when I’m looking to look after myself, I pay more attention to what I need and less to what others are doing.

However, I was never a fan of baths until social media started curating next-level hot-dogs-or-legs bathtime inspo. I love a good bath bomb drop Insta video, or a glamorous bathtub tableau snap (the fact that you’re reading your iPad in the tub worries me, but it looks nice atop your bamboo tray and glass of white wine). I attribute my new affinity for baths to Instagram, but it doesn’t hurt that my apartment’s pink-and-maroon 1950s art deco bathroom features a nice tub set up.

Is there something you wish to add to your self care routine?

I used to really love to cook and bake as means of self care, but my apartment’s kitchen is really limiting in size and scope, and ends up getting really dirty really quickly when cooking, which usually serves to stress me out even more.


I am a hairstylist behind the chair, occasionally freelancing and I am the mother of this blog and two catz: Pickles + Udon.

Do you practice any forms of self care, and if so what is it?

I love to do yoga, read books and take baths. Bonus points to me if I am reading while taking a bath. A really great week for me consists of daily yoga practice, diving into a good book and one overloaded multicoloured bubble bath that I hangout it for an unreasonable amount of time.

How did you come to find this as an active practice of self care?

I have always loved reading books. I was interested more in my fairytales than real life, and I could escape into the world between the pages- I find that still applies now. When I’m lost in a great book I can finally turn my mind off of the things that nag at me; work, bills, responsibilities. Yoga is a new form of self-care for me, what started as me desperately trying to find relief for back pain has turned into something I need to help center myself. I love to find time to roll out the mat, I find myself craving that mat time when I’m stressed or suffering from major back pain. Frequent practice is also now a form of self care to take my brain away from the world off the mat. Lastly, baths have just always been a thing I’ve taken, done and enjoyed. Something look forward to at the end of a long week.


Do you find yourself influenced through the people you follow online on how you practice self care?

Yes and No. I don’t find myself trying to copy each form of self-care that I see someone I follow post online. But I do take recommendations and tips, so if I see someone post about a really great bath bomb that I think is pretty I may purchase it. I trade books with friends (Regan being one of them) and read their recommendations. But I feel no additional pressure to copy someone else’s self care routine.

Is there something you wish to add to your self care routine?

If I could add in more exercise + learn how to cook // and actually enjoy it I would be a very happpy human. Right now I find adding anything else to my schedule a little overwhelming, but I’m getting there!

    I love your idea of finding out what people are doing to care for themselves. So often it’s the last thing on our list! And, like some of the interviewees stated, it’s not healthy to compare ourselves to the people we follow on social media. And, if we are influenced, it’s in a motivational and positive way.     I practice self care by taking a day for myself. It’s my selfish day lol. I make sure I do no work at all, I stay off social media & I end the day with some wine, a little light reading and an amazing bath.

    Hmm, I never thought of cooking as self care, but it really can be. I love going to the farmer’s market & cooking up really fresh eats that I find there! It has a big impact on the way I feel.

    My biggest way to give myself love is to be in nature. Hiking, camping, kayaking & laying in a hammock give me so much peace. I find I am able to better process & deal with things when I spend time in nature. It’s really a grounding and centering force to be surrounded with natural things.

    I love the diversity of responses, it shows that not everyone is the same when it comes to what makes us feel relaxed and at ease! I bake as my primary form of self-care, usually with a glass of wine and some music. Lately I’ve been finding that podcasts help my anxiety, as the sound of a regular contributor’s voice is ridiculously soothing for some reason.
